Weymouth Day Sail

4th Sep 2016 09:00 - 17:00

Day Sails - only £125 per person.

Ever wondered what it 's like to sail a traditional square rigged sailing ship? Well here is your chance...

Join the TS Pelican and enjoy a great sailing experience - "before the mast" on a square rigged tall ship from a bygone era (ages 12-80*).

What is a Day Sail? Do I need any sailing experience?

It's a taster! Come aboard TS Pelican as a passenger and experience part of the beautiful Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site.

Get involved in pulling lines, setting sail and steering the ship, all under the supervision of our expert crew. Alternatively, sit back, relax and enjoy the complete experience!

Day sails are for the whole family (12-16 year olds must be accompanied by an adult).

A welcoming hot drink  on arrival, a hearty lunch, tea and cake in the afternoon, and refreshments throughout the day are included.

What can I expect from my sailing experience?

Please arrive between 0900 and 0930. You will be met by one of our team who will confirm your arrival on a crew list. There is a designated area for you to leave any bags, coats etc (at your own risk).

Following a welcome briefing, the Captain will outline his plans for the day. There will be a short safety briefing prior to departure at approximately 1000 hrs.

Our itinerary and where we go depend on the weather on the day of the sail. Plans may need to change, for example, if the wind is against us.

A typical Day Sail itinerary

Please arrive in plenty of time to register at the start of the day. The ship sails promptly and  boarding is not permitted once the gangway has been detached.

A sample itinerary for your day may be as follows:

  • 0915   Passengers arrive - to be met on the gangway by a ship's representative
  • 0930   All attend the Captain's Welcome - Captain introduces Pelican's crew
  • 0945   Briefing by Chief Mate on safety and donning life jackets, followed by practice emergency muster
  • 1000   Prepare to leave the slip (quayside)
  • 1130   Passengers invited to a briefing on sail setting, tacking and wearing ship
  • 1145   Begin tacking, wearing ship and setting sail
  • 1230   Buffet lunch for passengers - there may be two sittings
  • 1530   Afternoon tea of snacks and refreshments
  • 1630   Coming alongside
  • 1700   Captain's Wash Up and passenger departure

Staying overnight in Weymouth

You may wish to make a weekend of your time in Weymouth and combine a day sail on board Pelican with a number of other interesting things to do in the area. Adventure Under Sail can provide you with a list of accommodation to suit any budget.  Please call us for details.

Where to find the ship

TS Pelican's home port is Weymouth, from where Adventure Under Sail operates the day sail experiences.

By Public Transport: Weymouth is very accessible by train and National Express routes from London. South West Trains runs a regular service each day from London Waterloo. Frequent coaches run to Weymouth via Bournemouth from London Victoria coach station. The ship is then a short walk from the station or coach stop, keeping the beach on your left hand side.

The nearest car park is behind Weymouth Pavilion where there is secure parking available right next to the ship's berth. Postcode DT4 8DX.
