Smugglers Haunts & The Cornish Coast

8th Sep 2017 10:00 - 14th Sep 2017 14:00

Poldark, Secret Coves & Smugglers Haunts

During our voyage we will explore the stunning coastline of Devon and Cornwall and drop anchor wherever the tide takes us near small fishing villages like Coverack, Cadgewith, Porthallow, Gillan Creek or Helford village. Characterful Inns, mystery, intrigue and devilment abound, trace the footsteps of the smugglers daring exploits around this beautiful part of our coast. The South West Coast Path means that where possible, you can stretch your legs and climb to the nearest headland to capture a photo of Pelican at anchor or the coastline in all its splendour. The Lizard has many caves with polished serpentine rock and the fast tides around the Manacles and Lizard Point attract wildlife like Basking Sharks and cetaceans. Crew with us amongst these captivating waters and wildlife for this amazing voyage.

Eastwards there are plenty of anchorages and if the wind is from the North or North West we can drop anchor in the abundance of harbours and bays. More sheltered options in other wind directions include Mevasgissey, Gorran Haven, and the magnificent setting of Fowey and Polruan, either side of the Fowey River.  Charlestown Harbour had new owners in 2015 so we look forward to visiting this tiny harbour basin - famous for the recent BBC Poldark Series and many other film sets.

Closer to the port of St Mawes is the colourful 'sailing playground' of Carrick Roads, which becomes a bit more challenging when the tide is out as there are shallow banks.  There is interesting navigation up to the old port of Penryn and Falmouth Harbour is big enough to sail right in and make an entrance.  The creek entrances of Restronguet, St Just, Mylor  and Trelissick offer scenic anchorages for different wind directions.

Experience the Majesty of Nature

Starry nights, ocean sunsets, readings of smugglers antics and music bring together this very special voyage. In between crew duties you can photograph isolated lighthouses, tiny harbours as well as the wave pounded cliffs along the coast.

The Gulf stream in this area can provide sightings of sunfish, turtles, bottlenose dolphins and giant basking sharks. The ever changing weather can also bring in sightings of many species of birds.

There are some world class dive spots locally due to the lack of major sediment bearing rivers, rich underwater ecosystem and wrecks, so it is well worth bringing a snorkel, mask & wetsuit in summer if you have mermaid (or merman) tendencies. Many of our anchorages are near interesting rock pools or eel grass, or maerl beds where seahorses hide.

Your voyage is inclusive of bunk accommodation and meals. You will also join the crew in sailing this magnificent vessel. We really think that there is no other way to see and experience this unique coast.
