Ben Swain came to visit us at the Royal Manor school last year. He told us about a Tall Ship that specialised in giving young people
adventure sailing experiences to help them learn new skills. I fancied doing something different and I remember loving the pictures
he showed us of the ship. It reminded me of a pirate ship and the perfect mode of transport for an adventure! I had never been sailing before. I registered to go onboard and I started fundraising for the voyage I had chosen, which was a leg of the Tall Ships Races taking place the next month.
I raised the berth fee and soon it was time for me to join the ship.I have to admit I was very nervous as I didn't know anyone else. I knew of three other girlsthat were going on the same voyage and worried that perhaps they wouldn't like me or that I wouldn't make any friends.
What a fantastic surprise it was that everyone was so friendly! I am still friends with many of the people that I met! I still smile when I think about the memories of life onboard.
I didn't even have a problem with getting up early when I was in watch! I was sea sick one day but I got over it by sitting out on deck, looking out to the horizon and admiring the views.
One of my favourite memories climbing the rigging and being up there whilst coming in to port, singing songs with my new friends. I also enjoyed the crew parties we had onboard as part of the Tall Ships Festival.
When I came back, I was only home for about two weeks before I went off and did another leg of the races! I enjoyed it so much. This year I have enrolled to do another leg on board TS Pelican. I'm doing the Lerwick to Stavanger leg.
One of the things we all said last year was how much more confident it had made us all and how pleased we were at the friends we made.
I'm currently doing my GCSE's and I am seriously considering joining the Navy in time to come!
I am hoping that this year's voyage builds on the skills I learnt last time around. I would definitely recommend going on the Tall Ships Races to any young person. |
