The Tall Ships Races are an International Youth Festival organised by Sail Training International, where over 100 Square Rigged Tall Ships and Sail Training vessels like the T S Pelican compete. Ships from all over the world will meet up to bring together communities of international youth from all the different continents to take part in these exciting events aimed at encouraging international friendships and understanding.
Between each port the ships will race each other to the next host port. T S Pelican has a good reputation for being very competitive in these races, aided by the fact that her unique rig makes her lively and fast both on and off the wind.
You'll join the ship as part of its crew and try to win the race. On your watch, you'll be trying to hold her position, whilst planning the best time to tack to stay ahead of your closest rival. During your rest period, you'll relax and learn a lot more about the ship. You might decide to takr navigation classes or be on day work assisting the Bosun or Cook.
Each Race series has a pre-determined route. This year, the fleet will be visiting the west Baltic and Southern Norway before returning across the North Sea to Hartlepool in the UK. The North Sea Regatta the takes the ships to Ijmuiden in Holland before continuing to Amsterdam for the Festival of the Sea
Joining day is full of excitement, walking through the festival crowds to join the ship.
The Permanent Crew will take you through some initial training, while the host port liaison signs you up for all of the activities available to voyage crew.

Crew will be invited to participate in the activities that are on offer from the Host Port. These include sports, arts and crafts fairs, museums and local visits. All crew will be expected to take part in the crew parade - to represent the ship.
The ship will depart to the start line of the race, taking part in the Parade of Sail.

After the Race starts, the engine is switched off. We sail or retire from the Race. Each day you will be the crew to tack and wear the ship, to keep position or overtake.
As the Fleet spreads the daily position is obtained during the communication hour. Onboard activities take place, such as inter watch competition and RYA Lectures as the ship enters routine.
Once the finish line is crossed or the Race is called all the ships make to the next host port for a Crew Party and meeting International friends again!
Departure Day is sad as it means leaving all of your new found friends.
