International Tall Ships RacesThe Tall Ships Races are a truly fantastic spectacle - a Youth Festival organised by Sail Training International, in which more than 150 tall ships and sail training vessels like the TS Pelican compete.
An International EventShips from all over the world will meet up to bring together youth communities from all different continents to take part in these exciting events aimed at encouraging international friendship and understanding.
Be part of a festival celebrating youth, international culture and traditional sailing vessels.

Between each port, the ships will race each other to the next host port. TS Pelican has a reputation for being very competitive, aided by the fact that her unique rig makes her lively and fun both on and off the wind.
Join the ship as part of its crew and try to win the race. Try to hold her position, whilst planning the best time to tack to stay ahead of your closest rival. During your rest period, relax and learn a lot more about the ship. Take navigation classes or be on day work assisting the Bosun or Cook.
Each race series has a pre-determined route. This year, the fleet will be visiting St Malo in France, racing for Lisbon in Portugal, then Cadiz in an exciting push to the finish line, before setting off on the more sedate Cruise in Company to A Coruna. The final leg of the races departs A Coruna for Dublin arriving on the 24th August for the final host port celebration.

The 2010 Tall Ships Races saw a young trainee on Pelican, Stephanie Chung from Weymouth, win the prestigious Torbay Trophy - an award which recognises outstanding personal achievement during the races. Coveted across the whole fleet, it is awarded to the trainee who has made the most progress during his or her time on board. Stephanie was chosen out of more than 6,000 participating trainees and was the youngest and first ever British trainee from a Class A vessel to win the international award.

All our young voyagers are encouraged to fundraise to cover the cost of their adventure. This generates a feeling of personal ownership and a sense of achievement even before your voyage starts.
It may seem a daunting prospect at first but with a little dedication and enthusiasm, raising your voyage fee is very achievable.
The cost of a 10-day voyage for each young person is on average £1,200 but you will need to raise in the region of £1,500 to ensure you have enough for insurance, travel to and from the ship and spending money.
Young people may apply in writing for funding from the Adventure Under Sail charity. We want to know how you intend to raise funds towards the voyage fee for your chosen voyage.
You will also be encouraged to complete a journal of your voyage, a copy of which will be sent to your sponsor, along with a record of individual achievement completed by the ship’s Captain or the ship’s Training Officer.
A copy of this record is provided to enhance your CV for future employment applications.
